| Exhibit 1 - 'Depth Control' The Submarine Depth Control is an interactive exhibit giving the visitor an opportunity to control the depth of a submarine. The submarine is represented by a plastic model and its position is controlled by a stepper motor. The depth of the submarine is also shown on a dial. At rest the submarine is on the surface and the visitor has to dive it to a depth of eighty metres and try to maintain it. The up and down movement is controlled by means of a ‘tipping handle’ which is typical of those used at the helm of submarines. The control software challenges the visitor by simulating the inertia of the submarine so changes to the control take time before the affect is seen by the submarine position. ![]() |
Exhibit 2 - 'Escape Chamber' The Escape Hatch in an interactive exhibit. Visitors follow instructions to learn about how a submariner can leave a submersed submarine. The visitor has to open and close hatches by turning handles and pushing buttons to turn on pumps to fill and drain chambers with water. The movement of the submariner is simulated by illuminating a series of graphics with the submariner being visible in a different position on each. ![]() |
